Dr Chris Lam
BA, BVSc (Hons), DipACVIM (Cardio)
Chris graduated in 2010 with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology and Japanese Studies from Middlebury College in Vermont.
After working in human breast cancer research in Hong Kong, Chris made his way to Australia where he completed his veterinary degree from the University of Sydney in 2015.
There he conducted his final year thesis in degenerative valvular disease, sparking his passion for veterinary cardiology, and subsequently graduated with first class honours.
Having worked briefly in a small animal practice in Ballarat, Chris returned to Canada where he grew
up, and completed a small animal rotating internship at the Ontario Veterinary College (OVC) in
Guelph, Ontario. During that time, he furthered his research interest and collaborated with the
cardiology faculty in publishing on novel biomarkers in acquired canine cardiac diseases.
Chris then seized an opportunity to start a mobile veterinary service in the High Western Arctic of
Canada, where he provided the only veterinary care within a 700km radius. There he also had the
opportunity in being part of the veterinary team for various international sled dog races, including
the famous 1000-mile Yukon Quest!
In 2018, Chris returned to Australia and practiced as a locum vet across NSW and Victoria. Through his previous research in cardiac diseases and wanting to make a difference in the lives of cardiac patients, Chris completed a 3-year cardiology clinical residency with VCA, and became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) and registered specialist in Veterinary Cardiology in 2022. Since then, Chris has continued to provide hospital-based referral cardiac care alongside the rest of the VCA team as part of the largest veterinary cardiac service in Australia.
Chris has presented and published internationally, and has a special interest in teaching and mentoring students/young veterinarians. Chris values the importance of providing an all-rounded continuum of care for patients with cardiac disease and is passionate in the ongoing research and education for veterinary practitioners to provide the best care to all cardiac patients.
While not at work, Chris enjoys classical music, Broadway musicals, spending time in the outdoors as well as exploring various culinary experiences with his family.
