A heart murmur is typically a “whooshing” sound heart by your vet with a stethoscope. If your cat is diagnosed with a heart murmur, the two most common causes are heart muscle disease (eg hypertrophic cardiomyopathy) or an innocent murmur.
An ultrasound examination of the heart by a specialist cardiologist is the most accurate method of findings out the cause of the murmur.
Cats usually lead sedentary lives and often don’t show outward signs of heart disease until it is advanced. For this reason all murmurs should be investigated before your cat appears unwell to give your cat the best possible outcome and quality of life.
